If you’ve ever tried on a bra in “your exact size” only to find it gaping at the top or cutting in at the sides, you aren’t alone. Size is just one metric. Shape is equally, if not more, important when searching for the perfect bra.

Here are the most common breast shapes and the styles that complement them.

1. Shallow vs. Projected

These terms describe how breast tissue is distributed over your chest wall.

Shallow

Shallow breasts have tissue spread widely across the chest. They may not protrude much, even if the cup volume is large.

  • Best Styles: Demi-cups, balconettes, and half-cup bras. Styles with vertical seams often work well.
  • What to Avoid: Full-coverage plunge bras, which may cause gaping at the top.

Projected

Projected breasts protrude outward from the chest wall. They are common in larger cup sizes but can occur at any size.

  • Best Styles: Unlined (seamed) bras, deep plunges, and full-cup styles that offer immediate depth at the underwire.
  • What to Avoid: Molded foam cup bras (like typical t-shirt bras), which are generally shallow and will push projected tissue downward or cause the underwire to slide down the ribs.

2. Full on Top vs. Full on Bottom

This refers to where the majority of your breast tissue sits relative to your nipple.

Full on Bottom (FoB)

More tissue below the nipple than above.

  • Best Styles: Balconette and plunge styles. Look for bras with stretch lace on the top panel to prevent gaping.

Full on Top (FoT)

More tissue above the nipple than below.

  • Best Styles: Full-coverage bras, half-cups with an open top edge.
  • What to Avoid: Bras with rigid top edges that may cut into the upper tissue (often called “quad-boobing”).

3. Wide vs. Narrow Roots

Your “root” is where the breast tissue attaches to your chest wall.

  • Wide Roots: Breast tissue extends far under the armpits. Look for brands known for wide and shallow underwires.
  • Narrow Roots: Breast tissue is concentrated primarily on the front of the chest. Polish brands are highly recommended for narrow, projected shapes.

Finding your perfect fit is a journey of understanding both your numbers and your unique shape. Don’t get discouraged!
